El pasado 9 de abril, Boeing anunció que recomendaba a los operadores de algunos 737 MAX específicos que abordaran un posible problema eléctrico antes de volver a volar el avión. Aerolíneas como Southwest, United, Alaska y Copa Airlines, han dejado en tierra parte de sus flotas MAX esperando una solución de parte de Boeing.
El jueves 22 de abril, la Administración Federal de Aviación (FAA) emitió una Notificación de Continuación de Aeronavegabilidad a la Comunidad Internacional (CANIC) detallando el problema y prometiendo que pronto seguiría una Directiva de Aeronavegabilidad.
El mensaje del fabricante estadounidense Boeing a los 16 clientes del 737 MAX afectados decía que se necesitaban acciones para verificar de que exista una ruta de tierra suficiente para un componente del sistema de energía eléctrica.
El CANIC de la FAA explica que se descubrió un problema de conexión eléctrica y a tierra durante las pruebas de un 737 MAX 8 recién fabricado. La investigación del constructor de Seattle identificó una posible degradación de los enlaces asociados con la conexión a tierra eléctrica de los equipos que podría potencialmente afectar el funcionamiento previsto de ciertos sistemas.
La situación afecta a ciertos aparatos salidos de la línea de montaje luego de que Boeing implementara ajustes en el diseño a principios de 2019. Según Seattle Times, Boeing cambió de remaches a sujetadores para el ensamblaje de estos equipos. Algunos MAX 8 y MAX 9 entre los números de serie 7399 y 8082 son los que deben ser revisados, en total unos 106 aviones, 70 de ellos operados por aerolíneas estadounidenses. Varios clientes tienen en flota solo uno o dos afectados, como por ejemplo el caso de la bielorrusa Belavia.
